Unique meetings
The plan for the day when I took this picture was to go early in the morning to the den where a hyena family resided, along with many young ones. I was hoping for interesting observations and numerous photos capturing interactions among the members of the hyena clan, but I was disappointed when, upon reaching the destination, it turned out that the den was abandoned. In a somewhat disappointed mood, we set out to find other subjects for observation. We didn't have to search for long because just a few hundred meters away, amidst thick, dry grass, emerged the Aardvark (Orycteropus afer afer). This representative of an exceptionally rarely observed species circled briefly near the den, using its highly sensitive sense of smell to check for any threats. Afterward, it retreated into the den, where it likely spent the rest of the day. This unexpected encounter significantly lifted our spirits because the opportunity to photograph this nocturnal and elusive animal in the morning light was unquestionably a remarkable event.
