African wildcat
At first glance, the cat shown in the photo looks like an ordinary moggy. That's what I thought when we saw it sneaking through the grass in the middle of the plains surrounding Lake Ndutu, Tanzania. But where does a domestic cat come from in this uninhabited area? The guide quickly corrected us. It turned out to be the African wildcat (Felis lybica), a wild cat inhabiting a large part of Africa. The similarity to our ordinary domestic cat is not accidental, because the African wildcat is considered its ancestor.
